If You Can’t Explain It Simply, You Probably Can’t Market It
I go to a lot of networking events.
Every week I hear introductions like:
And every time I hear it, I have the same thought:
“What the hell do you actually do?”
The problem isn’t that these people aren’t good at what they do. The problem is they’re trying to sound important instead of trying to be understood.
Marketing isn’t about sounding smart. Marketing is about being understood.
Explain It or Lose Them
Here’s a challenge. Pretend you’re standing in front of a 10-year-old. You have 10 seconds to explain what you do. No buzzwords. No corporate language. No LinkedIn resume talk. No fancy industry jargon.
Just explain it.
“I provide business consulting services.”
“I help business owners stop losing money by fixing the mistakes their employees make every day.”
“I specialize in AI implementation.”
“I help companies use computers to do boring work so their employees don’t have to.”
“I own a landscaping company.”
“I make yards so beautiful your neighbors get jealous.”
One describes a job. The other paints a picture.
Stop Telling Me What You Do
Tell Me What Happens Because of It
Nobody buys landscaping. They buy the best-looking yard in the neighborhood.
Nobody buys window tint. They buy a cooler car, more privacy, and a vehicle that stands out at the car meet.
Nobody buys interior design. They buy the feeling people get when they walk into the house and say: “Wow.”
People don’t buy products. People buy outcomes.
And if you’re smart, you also sell a little bit of ego.
The Ego Is Part of the Sale
Make Them Feel Something
Let’s be honest. Human beings are emotional creatures. Part of every purchase is solving a problem. The other part is how it makes us feel.
“I cut grass and install pavers.”
“I make your house the one everyone slows down to look at.”
“I help clients select furnishings.”
“I turn ordinary homes into magazine-worthy showpieces.”
“We install window tint.”
“We make cars cooler, cleaner, and better-looking than the one parked next to you.”
Which one gets your attention?
The Biggest Networking Mistake
Nobody Cares About You
Most people spend their entire introduction talking about themselves. Nobody cares. People care about themselves.
Stop Leading With Who You Are
Instead of telling me who you are, tell me what problem you solve.
Stop Leading With Your Title
Instead of telling me your title, tell me the result.
Stop Leading With Your Service
Instead of telling me your service, tell me why I should care.
The faster people understand you, the faster they’ll remember you.
Three Sentences. Ten Seconds. Done.
Explaining what you do is step one. Step two is making people actually want to buy it. That’s where most business owners completely fall apart.
Here’s what a real sales introduction needs:
-
What you do
In plain words a kid would understand. -
Who you help and what disappears
Name the person. Name the problem they stop having when they hire you. -
Why you over anyone else
Say it with zero apology. If you mean it, they’ll feel it.
Most people never get past sentence one and then wonder why nobody remembers them at the follow-up.
Why Should Anyone Buy From You?
This is where most people freeze up. They go humble. They go vague. They say “We really care about our customers” or “We’ve been in business for 20 years.”
Nobody cares about that either.
Confidence in sales isn’t arrogance. It’s clarity.
When you can say exactly why you’re better with zero hesitation, people believe you. When you fumble and hedge and qualify, they feel the doubt and they walk.
Pick one thing you do better than everyone else in your market. Own it out loud. Not apologetically. Not with a disclaimer. Say it like it’s obvious, because to you it should be.
“We really care about every customer and go the extra mile on every project.”
“We’re the only shop in town that does paint protection and window tint under one roof. One warranty. One invoice. A car that looks better than it did at the dealership.”
“We’ve been in business for 20 years and really value our clients.”
“We’re the only marketing agency in this city that also runs the biggest local community groups. When we promote your business, 200,000 people actually see it.”
That’s not bragging. That’s business.
Can You Answer Without Flinching?
Someone walks up and asks: “Why should I buy from you instead of the guy down the street?”
Can you answer in under 15 seconds without pausing, qualifying, or going soft?
If the answer is no, that’s your homework. Not a new logo. Not a website redesign. Not a new Instagram grid.
Figure out what you actually do better, then practice saying it until it sounds like breathing.
Simple Wins Every Single Time
Every word that needs explaining loses someone. Every industry term the customer doesn’t know creates distance. Every time you bury the benefit inside the description of the service, you give people a reason to tune out.
Simple is not dumbing it down. Simple is doing the hard work of making it easy for someone to say yes. The best salespeople make buying feel obvious.
- “I make ugly yards beautiful.”
- “I help businesses get more customers.”
- “I make cars look better than the day you bought them.”
- “I save people time.”
- “I help companies stop wasting money.”
Three Sentences. Right Now.
The next time someone asks what you do, don’t tell them your job title. Don’t tell them your industry. Don’t tell them your certifications.
Tell them in 10 seconds. Tell them like they’re 10 years old. Tell them what problem you solve and what outcome you create. And if you can make them smile while you’re doing it, even better.
Because people may forget your title. They’ll never forget the guy who said:
“I make sexy yards.”
“I turn boring houses into homes people can’t stop talking about.”
Clear beats clever every single time. Confident beats complicated every single time. The person who can explain their value in ten seconds will always out-sell the person who takes ten minutes.
That’s marketing. That’s how people remember you. And that’s the whole game.
